Ending Coppell water service when you move
Coppell runs its own water, sewer and trash billing, and its rules for ending service are specific. Per the city's service set-up and cancellation page:
- The account holder, and only the account holder, submits the online Service Cancellation Request.
- Give at least 24 hours' notice. The city does not turn service off on weekends or holidays.
- On the requested date, the water is shut off sometime between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. A form sent after 3 p.m. is treated as received the next business day.
- Bills are not prorated, so time the request with your closing or move-out date.
Utility Billing is at 255 Parkway Blvd. and answers at 972-304-3695. Card payments carry a 2.95% processing fee with a $2 minimum. If you are renting the house out instead, the same page notes that a rental must be registered and inspected before a new tenant can set up a utility account.
Dallas County, Denton County and who collects the tax
Coppell had an estimated 41,785 residents in 2024, according to the Census Bureau, and it spans two counties, Dallas County and Denton County. The city's tax page links both appraisal districts so you can pick yours: the Dallas Central Appraisal District or the Denton Central Appraisal District. If you are unsure, search your address in each, or look at the county named on your deed. File any value protest with your district's Appraisal Review Board, which also hears it.
City taxes are handled in one place. The tax page says the Dallas County Tax Office collects property taxes for all property inside Coppell city limits, and you can pay in person at any of its eight locations, or by phone, by mail or online with a no-cost e-check. The tax office's jurisdictions list includes both the City of Coppell and the Coppell school district. Denton County addresses may also get a statement from the Denton County Tax Assessor-Collector (940-349-3500), so check every bill and ask each office for a payoff through your closing date.
Deeds follow the county line too. In Dallas County, the County Clerk's Recording Division at 500 Elm Street, Suite 2100, records deeds and releases. In Denton County, the clerk's Recording Division keeps all real property records and takes electronic filings only through its approved recording partners.
Rentals, storage pods and code compliance
Thinking of renting the house for a while before you sell? Coppell's rental registration program covers every rental in the city. Registration is due on or before January 31 each year, or as soon as a house becomes a rental, and the home must be inspected before a tenant moves in or changes. For a single-family rental the city lists a $50 registration fee and a $40 inspection fee.
Code issues are handled by the city's Code Compliance division, part of Community Development: three officers, each assigned an area of the city. One rule catches sellers who are packing up: a temporary portable storage container, the kind you load in the driveway, requires a permit application emailed to Code Compliance. Questions go to 972-304-3500.
Rather stay and fix up the outside? Coppell's Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a yearly one-day volunteer event for exterior home and yard projects. The homeowner must live in the home, and projects depend on volunteer availability. Contact neighbors@coppelltx.gov or 972-304-3676.
Probate, foreclosure and eviction, by county
Probate. An estate is opened in the county where the person who died lived (Estates Code section 33.001). A Coppell resident on the Dallas County side would go to one of Dallas County's probate courts at 600 Commerce Street. On the Denton County side, the county describes Probate Court No. 1 as a statutory probate court that probates wills and declares heirs when someone dies without one. Ask a Texas probate attorney who can sign for the estate.
Foreclosure. Sales take place on the first Tuesday of the month, after notice posted at least 21 days earlier (Property Code section 51.002). Dallas County holds them at the George Allen Courts Building, and its clerk's foreclosure notices page posts files by city, Coppell included. Denton County's foreclosure information page names the southwest corner of the Denton County Courts Building, 1450 E. McKinney Street in Denton, and notes that its clerk only file-marks and keeps the notices; the sale itself is run by the trustee.
Eviction. A suit to remove a tenant is filed with the justice court for the precinct where the house is (Property Code sections 24.004 and 24.0041). Dallas County and Denton County both offer a lookup to find that precinct.
