Collin or Denton: find your side of the line
The Town of Prosper had about 44,503 residents in 2024, by the Census Bureau's estimate, and the town limits reach into two counties: Collin County and Denton County. The county line decides more than you might expect. Denton County's appraisal districts page explains that since 2008 each appraisal district's boundaries match its county's, so you deal with the district for the county your property sits in. Values and exemptions go to that district; a protest is filed with its appraisal review board, which also hears it.
To find your side of the line, pull out last year's appraisal notice or tax statement and see which district's name is on it. If you have neither, search the address on the Collin Central Appraisal District site first, then on the Denton district's site.
Tax bills and deed records by county
| Collin County address | Denton County address | |
|---|---|---|
| Tax bill | The Collin district's entity table lists the Collin County Tax Office as collector for Prosper Town and Prosper ISD. The county tax office mails statements in October; pay by January 31 to avoid penalties. | The Denton County Tax Assessor-Collector (P.O. Box 90223, Denton; 940-349-3500) offers statements by email. Read your statement to see which entities it covers. |
| Deed records | Collin County Clerk, land recordings, McKinney | Denton County Clerk, 1450 E. McKinney St., Denton, the official keeper of the county's real property records |
The Denton clerk also offers free real property fraud alert registration. It is worth a look if the house will sit empty while you sell.
Closing out a Prosper utility account
Prosper's Utility Customer Service department handles water, sewer, trash and recycling in one account, including ending service. To cancel, the town asks you to email ucs@prospertx.gov or call 972-569-1180. The office is on the first floor of Town Hall, 250 W. First St.
Two forms on the town's applications and forms page are worth knowing when a house changes hands. Landlords have their own application to transfer utility service on a rental property, and there is a Utility Bill Financial Assistance Program described in a PDF on the same page. If you owe on the account and money is tight, read that before the final bill arrives.
Cleaning out: bulk pickup and the Saturday drop-off
Prosper contracts with Republic Services for trash and recycling, and the town's trash and recycling page spells out what a move-out can use:
- Weekly bulk. Up to 4 cubic yards of bulk waste each week, set out on your regular service day. Furniture and appliances count; appliances that held refrigerant need a tag from a certified technician showing it was removed.
- Not taken with bulk. Hazardous waste, car parts, tires, and items like bricks and concrete.
- Saturday drop-off. Bulky items may be dropped off at Prosper Public Works, 601 W. Fifth St., on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and noon. Be ready to show your Prosper utility bill as proof that you live in town.
That last rule has a timing catch. If you cancel the utility account before the cleanout is done, you may lose the bill you need to get in. Plan the drop-off trips first. Our vacant house checklist helps with the order of steps.
What Prosper code compliance looks for
The town's Health & Code Compliance division inspects properties and investigates nuisance and zoning complaints. The common violations it lists are abandoned or junked vehicles on private property, high grass and unmanaged lawns, junk in the yard, stagnant water, vehicles parked in the yard and home occupations. The division is at 250 W. First St. and answers at 972-569-1079.
Foreclosure notices in two counties
Under Property Code 51.002, the notice of a foreclosure sale must be posted and filed in each county where the property sits, at least 21 days before the sale, and sales happen on the first Tuesday of the month. For Prosper that means one of two places:
- Collin County. Posted notices can be searched and filtered by city in the county's foreclosure notice search.
- Denton County. The clerk's foreclosure information page says its role is limited to file-marking and keeping the Notice of Sale postings. Auctions are held at the southwest corner of the Denton County Courts Building, 1450 E. McKinney St., at the time stated on each notice, and questions about a sale go to the substitute trustee.
If your house is on either list, read our page on selling before a foreclosure sale. Free civil legal help in Collin County comes from Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas in McKinney, 972-542-9405.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I cancel water and trash at a Prosper house I am selling?
The town asks you to email ucs@prospertx.gov or call Utility Customer Service at 972-569-1180. Water, sewer, trash and recycling are on the same account.
Can I take a trailer load to the Prosper drop-off after I move out?
The Saturday drop-off at 601 W. Fifth St. (8 a.m. to noon) asks you to show your Prosper utility bill as proof of residency, so plan those trips before the account is closed.
Which appraisal district values my Prosper home?
The one for the county the property is in: the Collin Central Appraisal District for a Collin County address, or the Denton Central Appraisal District for a Denton County address. Your appraisal notice names it.
Where are Denton County foreclosure auctions held for Prosper homes?
At the southwest corner of the Denton County Courts Building, 1450 E. McKinney St. in Denton, on the first Tuesday of the month at the time on each notice. Collin County addresses are posted in Collin County instead.
