Which county is your Wylie house in?
Wylie touches three counties. The city's own property tax page says Wylie has property in Collin County, Rockwall County and Dallas County, and that the appraisal district of each county values the property inside its borders. With about 62,954 residents in 2024 (Census Bureau estimate), Wylie has residents in all three counties, so check yours before you assume.
The quickest test is paperwork you already have. Your appraisal notice and your tax statement both name the district that values the house. You can also search the address on each district's site. Once you know the county, the rest follows:
| If the house is in | Appraisal district | Deed recorded by |
|---|---|---|
| Collin County | Collin Central Appraisal District, McKinney | Collin County Clerk, 2300 Bloomdale Rd., McKinney |
| Rockwall County | Rockwall Central Appraisal District, 841 Justin Road, Rockwall | Rockwall County Clerk |
| Dallas County | Dallas Central Appraisal District | Dallas County Clerk, Recording Division, 500 Elm St., Dallas |
A value protest is filed with that district's Appraisal Review Board, which also hears it. Each county's appraisal review board hears it.
Property tax bills on each side of the county lines
Wylie's tax page names Scott Grigg, at P.O. Box 8006 in McKinney (972-547-5020), as the city's tax assessor-collector, and the Collin district's entity table lists the Collin County Tax Office as collector for Wylie City and Wylie ISD. The city page also says taxes are levied on January 1 and become past due on February 1 of the next year, with statements going out in October.
Rockwall County works differently. Its tax office page says that since October 1, 2012, the Rockwall Central Appraisal District has handled Rockwall County property taxes and their collection, so residents there get one bill listing the entities. If your house sits on the Rockwall side, read each statement you receive to see which office bills which entity, and ask each one for a payoff figure before closing.
On the recording side, the Rockwall clerk's property records page says a valid ID is required when you file documents in person, and lists $25 for the first page and $4 for each added page. In Dallas County, the Recording Division records deeds, liens and releases of lien, open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays at (214) 653-7099.
Past repairs and Wylie building permits
Buyers and their inspectors often ask whether past work had a permit. Wylie's Building Inspection Department keeps a list of projects that need one, and it covers far more than additions. Among the residential items:
- Roof replacement, window replacement and foundation repair.
- Water heater, water line, gas line and sewer line work.
- Heating and air conditioning installs and replacements, including ductwork.
- Fences, decks, patio covers, driveway extensions and other concrete work.
- Electrical panel upgrades and room additions or remodels.
The department says the list is not complete and asks owners who are unsure to call 972-516-6100, option 3. If you know a past job skipped the permit, that is a question for the department or a Texas real estate attorney, not something to guess about in a disclosure. Our page on selling a house that needs repairs explains the as-is route.
Water, bulk pickup and code rules on move-out
Wylie bills water and trash together through its Utilities Customer Service office at the Municipal Complex, 300 Country Club Rd., open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays (972-516-6100). The page has an online Disconnect Service Form. It also warns that any past-due amount must be paid right away and that not receiving a bill does not waive late fees or a disconnection, which matters if the bills go to a house nobody is living in.
For a cleanout, the city's brush and bulk page says CWD takes up to 4 cubic yards per home each month with no call needed. Bulk day is a Saturday tied to your trash day, and items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. Furniture, appliances and bundled carpet are accepted. Commercial construction and remodeling debris, tires, batteries, propane tanks and household hazardous waste such as paint, motor oil and chemicals are not.
Piles that sit too long can turn into a complaint. Wylie's Code Compliance office (972-516-6440) takes online reports of high grass and weeds, broken fences, junk stored outside, wrecked vehicles on private property and trailers or RVs parked on an unimproved surface on private property. Our guide to selling a vacant house has more.
Estates and tenants: where Wylie cases go
When the owner has died. Texas opens probate in the county where the person who died lived, not where the house sits (Estates Code 33.001). A Wylie owner who lived on the Collin side would usually go to the Collin County Probate Court in McKinney; its probate FAQ says an attorney is needed in every case where someone must be approved to run the estate. If the owner lived in Rockwall or Dallas County, the case belongs there, and a probate attorney can confirm the court.
When a tenant is still in the house. Evictions are filed with a justice of the peace. Collin County's civil suits page says each eviction must be filed in the precinct where the property is located, and its justice of the peace page has a precinct map. For free help, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas serves Collin and Rockwall counties from McKinney (972-542-9405) and runs a Rockwall County virtual telephone clinic for civil matters, including landlord and tenant problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Wylie house in Collin, Rockwall or Dallas County?
The city says Wylie has property in all three. Your appraisal notice or tax statement names the district that values the house, and that district's county is where the deed is recorded.
Do I need a permit record for an old roof or water heater job in Wylie?
Wylie's list of projects requiring permits includes roof replacement and water heater installs and replacements. If you are unsure about past work, the Building Inspection Department takes calls at 972-516-6100, option 3.
How much can I put out for Wylie bulk pickup while emptying the house?
The city's page says CWD removes up to 4 cubic yards per residence per month, on a Saturday set by your trash day, with items at the curb by 7 a.m. Larger loads need another plan.
Who collects property taxes on the Rockwall County side of Wylie?
Rockwall County's tax office page says the Rockwall Central Appraisal District has handled the county's property taxes and collections since 2012. Wylie's city tax page names a McKinney-based collector for the city, so read each statement to see who bills what.
