Ellis County offices, with a branch in town
Midlothian is an Ellis County city, and the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate was about 44,104 residents. The county tax office runs a branch in the city, and the county clerk records deeds in Waxahachie.
- Ellis County Tax Office, Midlothian branch. 661 Aspen Pkwy, Suite 100, (972) 825-5600, weekdays 8:00 to 4:30, per the tax office site. The City of Midlothian is on the office's collections-by-entity sheet as a unit it collects for, along with Midlothian ISD.
- Ellis Appraisal District. The district holds the value and the owner of record. Besides online protest filing, its portal lets you schedule an informal appointment and check in for an appraisal review board hearing. The formal protest itself goes to that board (Tax Code § 41.44).
- Recording. Deeds are recorded by the Ellis County Clerk in Waxahachie, 109 S. Jackson St. (972-825-5070), weekdays 8:00 to 4:30; the clerk's menu also links a Property Fraud Alert page.
City exemptions and the tax freeze
The Ellis County Tax Office's 2025 rates and exemptions sheet shows how much of a Midlothian homestead the city leaves untaxed. For the City of Midlothian it lists:
- a general homestead exemption of 20% of value, with a $5,000 minimum;
- an exemption of $150,000 for owners 65 or older, and the same $150,000 for disabled owners;
- a tax freeze, which the sheet's freeze table dates to 2018 for owners 65 or older and to 2023 for disabled owners.
Midlothian ISD shows a 10% local homestead exemption on the same sheet, on top of the state-required school exemptions noted at the bottom: $140,000 for every resident homestead and another $60,000 when the owner is 65 or older. These figures describe what each unit offers, not your own account; check your tax statement or ask the appraisal district about your record.
Past-due taxes, foreclosure, tenants and estates
Catching up on taxes before closing. The Ellis County tax office FAQ says you may pay the current year before older delinquent years, but the website cannot choose the year for you; mail the payment or bring it in, and write the tax year on the check. Mailed payments go to P.O. Drawer 188, Waxahachie, TX 75168, with a copy of the statement and the property ID written on the check. If a statement has not arrived by mid-November, the FAQ puts the burden on the owner to get one, and it cites Tax Code § 33.01 for penalties and interest that apply whether or not a bill was received.
Older debts. The same FAQ says a tax lien foreclosure suit can be filed in District Court, and after a judgment the delinquent tax attorney, with the tax office's approval, can proceed with a tax sale. The tax sales page says those sales are held online the first Tuesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. A lender's foreclosure also runs on the first Tuesday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and moves to the first Wednesday when that Tuesday falls on January 1 or July 4 (Property Code § 51.002). For people who qualify, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas lists a Waxahachie office at 110 East Main St., Suite 200 (972-923-3344). See our page on selling before a foreclosure sale.
Tenants and estates. An eviction is filed with the justice court for the precinct where the property is (Property Code § 24.004), generally after at least three days' written notice to vacate unless the lease sets another period (§ 24.005). Probate belongs in the county where the owner lived when they died (Estates Code § 33.001), which for a Midlothian resident is Ellis County; the County Clerk's page lists a Guardianship/Probate Division line, 972-825-5079.
