One city, two counties
Glenn Heights had 19,752 residents in the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate, and the Census lists the city in two counties: Dallas County and Ellis County. Which county your lot is in decides which appraisal district values it and which county clerk holds its deed. Do not guess from the street name or the ZIP code. Search the address in both appraisal districts:
- the Dallas Central Appraisal District, which appraises for the 61 local governing bodies in Dallas County and runs the uFILE online protest; and
- the Ellis Appraisal District, whose site offers property and map searches, online protest filing and informal appointment scheduling.
The district that returns your account is the one that sets your value. DCAD's own site adds that title research should be done at the appropriate county clerk's office, which in Glenn Heights can be either county. In either county, the written notice of a protest is filed with that district's appraisal review board (Tax Code section 41.44).

Probate when the owner has died
An estate case is opened in the county where the person who died resided, if that person had a Texas domicile or fixed residence (Estates Code section 33.001). In a two-county city that matters twice over: the owner's residence picks the probate county, while the lot's location picks the clerk who records the deed after a sale. An owner who lived in the Dallas County part of Glenn Heights would have the case filed in Dallas County, where the probate courts page lists The Probate Court, Probate Court No. 2 and Probate Court No. 3 at 600 Commerce Street, 7th floor. An owner who lived on the Ellis County side would have it filed in Ellis County. Our guide to selling an inherited house in Texas walks through the steps that come first.
When someone will not move out
If a tenant or a relative stays in the house and will not leave, the eviction suit is filed in the justice court for the precinct where the property is located (Property Code sections 24.004 and 24.0041). That puts a Dallas County address in a Dallas County justice court; the county's Justice of the Peace page notes that its JP districts match its constable precincts and links a district map. An address on the Ellis County side goes to the Ellis County justice court for its precinct. Our post on evicting a squatter in DFW covers finding the right precinct and the county filing fees.
Foreclosure notices go to the county where the house is
Texas law requires a foreclosure notice to be posted at the courthouse and filed with the county clerk of each county where the property is located, at least 21 days before a first-Tuesday sale, and the sale takes place in the county where the land is (Property Code section 51.002). For the Dallas County part of Glenn Heights, the clerk's foreclosure page keeps Glenn Heights notice files sorted by month. Our page on stopping a foreclosure by selling explains what can still be done once a notice is posted.
