Granbury property taxes run through Hood CAD
Granbury had 13,263 residents on July 1, 2025, by the Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimates (Census city and town tables). Granbury is a Hood County city, and the state Comptroller's Hood County directory lists the City of Granbury as an active taxing unit there. That same entry says the Hood County tax office, 1410 W. Pearl St., does not collect property taxes and points owners to the appraisal district.
So the Hood Central Appraisal District at 1902 W. Pearl St. (817-573-2471) is the office to call about a tax bill. Three pages on its site matter here:
- A tax certificate. Under Tax Code 31.08, anyone can ask the collector for a certificate showing delinquent taxes, penalties, interest and known costs due to each unit on a property. The request page says the fee is $10 for each certificate.
- Paying by card. The card payment page says a non-refundable convenience fee applies to card or e-check payments. Card payments are taken only on the website or in person at the district, and none are accepted over the phone. Funds can take up to 3 to 5 days to reach Hood CAD.
- Protests. The home page says the district would prefer that owners file protests with the Appraisal Review Board online through its website, instead of by mail or in person.
Under Tax Code 41.44(a), a protest notice goes to the appraisal review board. Under Tax Code 31.02, taxes are generally delinquent if unpaid before February 1 of the year after they are imposed.
Back taxes and the Hood County tax sale
Hood CAD's property tax sale page says the district periodically holds sales of property that the District Court of Hood County has ordered sold for delinquent taxes. Sales take place on the first Tuesday of the month, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., in the 2nd floor courtroom of the Hood County Courthouse, 100 East Pearl Street.
If you have fallen behind, request a tax certificate to see the full amount owed, then ask the district for a payoff figure good through your planned closing.
City of Granbury utility accounts
Chapter 13 of the city code covers city utilities, including an article on electric system rates and rules. Article 13.02, the general utility system rules, sets out what happens when an account opens or closes:
- Service is connected after the city receives the deposit, an approved inspection by the building official, any transfer fees, and payment of delinquent balances in the customer's name (13.02.004).
- The city pays no interest on deposits. After service ends, the deposit is applied to any remaining balance and a credit balance is refunded (13.02.003).
- If a bill is not paid within 15 days of the due date, a disconnection notice is mailed with a deadline at least 10 days after mailing (13.02.012).
Inherited Granbury homes and Hood County courts
Estates Code 33.001 places probate in the county where the person who died lived, if they had a Texas domicile or fixed residence. An owner who lived in Granbury means a Hood County case. An owner who lived in another Texas county means a case in that county, even when the house is in Granbury.
Government Code 25.1131 gives Hood County one statutory county court, the County Court at Law No. 1 of Hood County. Section 25.1132(c) gives it concurrent jurisdiction with the district court in contested probate matters under Estates Code 32.003(a). For an uncontested filing, ask the Hood County Clerk which court takes it.
Deeds follow the land: Property Code 11.001(a) requires a real property instrument to be recorded in the county where part of the property is located, which here means Hood County. Local Government Code 193.003 has the county clerk index recorded deeds by grantor and grantee (Property Code ch. 11, Local Government Code ch. 193).
Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas lists Hood County among those its Weatherford office serves and offers legal help for people who qualify. Read selling an inherited house in Texas or how long an executor has to sell.
